Light a Room in Three Layers
A single ceiling light is the most common way to light a room and one of the least flattering. It lights everything evenly, so nothing stands out, and it throws hard shadows that leave the corners looking dull. Designers build light in three layers instead.
Ambient light sets the overall level: ceiling lights, wall lights or a bright floor lamp. Task light does a job, like a reading lamp beside the sofa or lighting under kitchen cabinets. Accent light picks out something worth noticing, such as a picture light or a small lamp on a shelf.
Put each layer on its own switch or dimmer. In the evening you can then turn the big light off, keep the lamps on and let the room change as the day winds down.
