Find the Darkest Thing in the Room
Here is a test that takes five seconds. Look around the room you are sitting in and find the darkest thing in it. If you have to search, you may have found the reason the room feels flat. When everything sits in the same soft, mid-range tones, the eye has nothing to anchor to, and a calm room can end up looking washed out.
The fix is not a black wall or a dramatic piece of furniture. A little contrast goes a long way. Try a charcoal cushion on a pale sofa, a dark timber picture frame or a small piece of furniture in a deeper tone.
You only need one or two dark elements to give the lighter ones something to measure against. A dark lampshade is an easy place to start, and one of the simplest things to swap if it does not work.
