Let One Thing Choose Your Colours
Choosing a colour scheme is where most people get stuck. A blank room gives you no starting point, and a paint chart gives you far too many. A simpler way is to let something you already love decide for you.
Pick a rug, a cushion, a painting or even a favourite book cover. Someone has already done the hard work of making its colours sit together, so borrow them. Choose a main colour for the walls and one or two accents from the piece, then repeat those colours around the room in small amounts.
Stop at three colours and resist adding more. Taken straight from one item, they co-ordinate without feeling matchy, and you never have to wonder whether they go together.
