The Professional Interior Design Course has been truly inspirational and a wonderful experience - engaging, educational and exciting! My design story began in art college with jewellery design and goldsmithing, which I didn't love, and I quickly gravitated to softer, more tactile fabrics and the world of millinery.
I have always had a keen interest in interior design and interiors. Friends and family would regularly ask me for ideas, help and advice regarding their interiors. I began helping a friend in her beautiful interior shop and showroom. For over a year now, I've been managing the shop, constantly learning, advising customers and loving this whole new set of learning skills. Enrolling with the British College of Interior Design felt like the natural step to take to formalise the learning process. I enrolled seeking to boost my confidence, understand where design ideas originate, and learn more about the design process and psychology.
The areas that most interest me are soft furnishings, colour and styling. However, the course has also provided me with the tools to take on space and light planning, as well as a comprehensive path towards floor planning and perspective drawing. The course has been so much more than I had imagined, and it has well and truly exceeded my expectations. Some assignments were challenging, but never a chore.
I've been in an incredibly fortunate position to have clients and friends at my fingertips, who were happy to act as 'guinea pigs', and let me work on their projects. Thankfully, they have all been pleased with the results. I was thrilled to be asked to take on a full house colour consultation - a paid job for a 'real' client. It was a slightly daunting task, as the client had strong preferences and was set on a dark colour palette throughout. I rose to the challenge and found the entire process flowed relatively easily with the help of all the various course notes. I advised on lighting and space planning and provided all professional and relevant paperwork as well. The client has been very happy, though work is not yet fully complete.
Another area of the course that has been inspiring is the business side, which I had previously given little thought to, but was taught in a very comprehensive manner, which has been enormously helpful.
I highly recommend this course; in fact, I'll be slightly sad when it finally comes to an end. I have achieved what I most wanted and so much more. The course is designed so that each student can take what they find most relevant and interesting and apply it to their own interior design journey. My journey is a work in progress. Although I may be nearing the end of my course, I feel that the learning process is just coming to fruition, and this won't have an end.
