The Professional Interior Designer Course with the British College of Interior Design greatly helped me with my goal. All important aspects of the profession are covered and are reflected in the assignments. There is a lot of room for personal interpretation. I often choose not to take the easiest path, challenging myself to get the best out of the assignments while making as much use as possible of the professional, extensive feedback from my tutor. The feedback was always positive, extensive, and constructive - never negative or condescending - which motivated me to continue pushing my boundaries. The extra explanation, on top of the personal feedback, is certainly of added value and provides an additional supplement to the course material. What is definitely a plus of the course assignments is that they are treated as if they were tasks for real clients. This prepares you for the working method of professional life.
The course has also helped me in my career: my online offerings has been expanded with new services, and clients can contact me for an interior design plan from A to Z. I work online, so I attract customers from all over the world. I am accessible and flexible because I work as a freelancer, and therefore, I can easily send order confirmations and invoices.
The interior design profession is very broad; it includes much more than just placing furniture in a room. In the course, you also learn how to prepare a full interior design plan, including a design brief, client communication, colour palettes and sample boards.
One of the topics that stood out during my course was the subject of sustainability. I researched ways of building and designing buildings, homes and spaces, taking into account the environment, climate and sustainability. I focused on my city, Valencia, where this is a hot topic after the floods caused by Storm Dana. I summarised vertical gardens, green roofs, and many other solutions in a report.
My teacher, Simon Savage, was very enthusiastic about this report, and on his advice, I have expanded it further; it can be read on my website, and of course, I also take the knowledge and content with me in all assignments and projects I carry out for clients.
I am curious about what the future will bring. I may settle outside Spain, and find more 'offline' connections there. No matter what, the knowledge from the course is always applicable. That is why I can recommend it to everyone who has ambitions to learn more about this profession, regardless of whether this is just out of curiosity or you want to make a professional career out of it.
