To become an interior architect in the UK you normally take a three-year degree in Interior Architecture or Spatial Design, then build experience in a practice. It is the most technical area of the interiors profession, sitting closest to the building itself.
The title causes a lot of confusion, though, and it is worth clearing up before you plan a route around it.
Interior architect or interior designer?
In the UK, the word architect is a protected title. This means only someone registered with the Architects Registration Board may call themselves an architect, so the compound term of interior architect sits in an awkward position and should be avoided by professionals unless they hold the relevant registration.
However, the term is usually used to describe a designer who works with the structure and fabric of a space rather than only its surfaces. This would be a professional who is reconfiguring layouts, moving non-structural walls, reworking how a building is entered and moved through, and most often coordinating their proposed changes closely with architects and engineers.

The usual pathway in
A three-year BA in Interior Architecture is the conventional starting point. After that comes practical experience, usually two or three years in a studio, working under people who have managed projects before. This is where you learn how a design survives contact with a builder, a budget and building regulations.
Some people come at it sideways, moving across from architecture, construction or interior design and building the technical knowledge on the job (obtaining the relevant qualifications and registration as required). That pathway is slower and it does happen.

What the work actually involves
Interior Architecture is about understanding what a building will and will not allow, and knowing when to bring in a structural engineer.
Working within building regulations, fire safety and accessibility requirements, which are binding specifications, rather than advisory items or ‘like to have’.
Coordinating with architects, engineers, contractors and project managers, is a large part of the job and the part people most often underestimate.
This involves specifying materials that have to meet performance standards, not just look right.
How long it takes
Three years for the degree, then two to three years of practice experience before you would be trusted to run projects of any size and become genuinely established.
That is a longer runway than most routes into interiors, and it is the main thing to consider. If you want to be working with clients within a year, this is not the fastest way to achieve this.
